Two swimmers rescued in critical condition off Plum Island Point in Newburyport

NEWBURYPORT — Two swimmers were rescued in critical condition Sunday evening off Plum Island Point, according to a joint statement from City Marshal Matthew Simons and Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury III.

At approximately 7 p.m. on June 8, the Newburyport Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of swimmers in distress. Responding crews observed two individuals struggling in the water.

Two nearby fishing boats assisted in the rescue. One fisherman brought an unresponsive swimmer to shore, where they received immediate treatment from Atlantic Ambulance EMS and Newburyport Fire crews. The second swimmer, also unresponsive, was pulled into another boat and met on the water by the U.S. Coast Guard, who provided medical aid and transported the individual to shore.

Both swimmers were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.

Newburyport police, Newburyport fire, the U.S. Coast Guard, Atlantic Ambulance, and the Newburyport Harbormaster responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Newburyport Police Department.
