Newburyport police seek leads after historic gravestones vandalized at Oak Hill Cemetery

NEWBURYPORT — Newburyport police are investigating the vandalism of two gravestones at Oak Hill Cemetery and are asking the public to help identify the suspect(s).

According to a statement from City Marshal Matthew Simons, on Sunday, July 6, at approximately 12:00 p.m., Newburyport police received reports that two gravestones appeared to be damaged and vandalized.

“The reporting party came to the police station and relayed that two gravestones dating from the late 1800s appeared to have had plaques and headstones forcibly removed,” Marshal Simons said in the statement.

One of the missing plaques commemorates English-born author James Parton, known for writing biographies of prominent American political figures. The other belongs to members of the Dodge family.

“The theft of bronze plaques from headstones at Oak Hill Cemetery is a deeply disturbing act that shows a complete disregard for the memory of those laid to rest and their families,” said Marshal Simons. “I am hopeful that someone may come forward with information that will lead to accountability for those responsible.”

A preliminary investigation indicates that the vandalism took place sometime last week. Police say no other reports of vandalism or missing headstones have been made about other cemeteries in Newburyport.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newburyport Police Department at (978) 462-4411.
