TOWNSEND — The Townsend Police Department is warning residents in the Mason and Greenville Road area to take precautions after a large black bear, estimated to weigh about 400 pounds, was spotted multiple times in recent days.

According to a statement from the department, the most recent sighting occurred Sunday, Aug. 10, around 5:30 p.m. while people were outside grilling.

“For everyone’s safety — especially if you have children or pets — please take these precautions for at least the next week: remove all bird feeders, secure and store trash, and close all doors, including garage doors,” police advised.

The department said environmental police recommend these measures because if the bear cannot find food for about a week, it is likely to move to another area.
