Stolen car chase through Abington and Rockland ends in crash; driver arrested, three hurt

ABINGTON — On Sunday, September 7, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Abington Police Department received three calls reporting an erratic driver who was swerving in their vehicle while entering Abington from Holbrook.

According to a statement from the Abington Police Department, the vehicle was later confirmed stolen and was reported to have traveled into Weymouth before returning to Abington.

“The operator was reported to be traveling into oncoming traffic, running red lights, and involved in a hit-and-run incident prior to officers’ arrival,” the Abington Police Department said in its statement. “Responding officers located the vehicle on Centre Avenue in the area of Cottage Street, where it was observed with heavy front-end damage.”

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop and continued along Centre Avenue toward Plymouth Street and into Rockland.

As the suspect’s vehicle entered the intersection near Stop & Shop, it narrowly missed a car exiting the lot. That car then struck an Abington police cruiser, pushing it into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a stationary vehicle on Centre Avenue.

Rockland received a fourth report of the erratic operator near Central Street and West Water Street. A second Abington officer spotted the vehicle near Central and Plymouth streets and attempted a stop, but the driver again refused to pull over and continued on Plymouth Street toward North Avenue. The vehicle later spun out near the intersection of North Avenue and Adams Street, and the driver fled on foot.

After a brief foot chase, officers took the suspect into custody and recovered a discarded firearm, later identified as an airsoft pellet gun. The driver – identified as Michael Lydon – appeared impaired and was transported to a local hospital.

According to police, Michael Lydon, 43, of Holbrook, had three outstanding warrants out for his arrest and was additionally charged with:

  1. Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle
  2. Failure to Stop for Police Officer
  3. Operating to Endanger
  4. Resisting Arrest
  5. OUI Drugs
  6. Operating on a Suspended License
  7. Possession of Controlled Substance
  8. Fail to Stop at a Red Light
  9. Speeding

Two vehicle occupants and an Abington police officer were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries from the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow, the Abington Police Department said.
