PITTSFIELD — On Saturday, September 6, 2025, a Pittsfield police officer was finishing a motor vehicle stop during a “saturation patrol” conducted by the traffic and patrol divisions of the Pittsfield Police Department when they observed an unregistered and uninsured off-road dirt bike pass by their location.
According to the CDC, “saturation patrols” involve a concentrated police presence in a specific area, typically during times and at locations where alcohol-impaired driving is known to occur.
According to a statement from the Pittsfield Police Department, the dirt bike entered the opposite lane of traffic, nearly collided with an oncoming vehicle, and then sped off at approximately twice the posted speed limit.
The officer searched for the dirt bike and located it less than five minutes later in Springside Park, where the operator had parked it and was standing beside it.
“The officer proposed a plan and hid behind some bushes to keep eyes on the dirt bike without revealing his position,” the Pittsfield Police Department said in its statement.
At this time, the officer requested backup.
“The dirt bike operator attempted to leave the area but could not get the dirt bike started. The officer seized the opportunity and ran at the operator, leading the operator to ditch the dirt bike in the grass and flee on foot,” the Pittsfield Police Department said. “A foot pursuit ensued and the operator was subsequently arrested. It was also determined that the dirt bike was reported stolen from a couple months ago.”
A search of the operator revealed baggies of heroin and ammunition. Police noted that the operator did not have a license to carry firearms.
“It was also determined that the PPD [Pittsfield Police Department] had been receiving many calls from citizens about this operator’s reckless behavior on the dirt bike over the past week or so,” the Pittsfield Police Department added.
The operator, whose name was not released in the statement, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Unlicensed Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Larceny of Motor Vehicle
- Operate to Endanger
- Speeding
- Possess Class A Drug
- Possession of Ammunition without FID/LTC
- Resisting Arrest
