North Reading home damaged in early morning two-alarm fire

NORTH READING — On Tuesday, Sept. 16, at approximately 4:55 a.m., North Reading Engine 3—staffed by Captain Brian Nash and Firefighters Jeff Carey, Cory Harris, and Liam Tannian—was dispatched to 52 Abbott Road in response to a reported house fire.

According to a statement from North Reading Fire Chief Don Stats, when the crew arrived on scene, they observed the home’s detached garage fully engulfed in flames, with the fire extending to the main structure of the house.

“A second alarm was immediately struck to bring additional personnel to the scene, including a second engine and ladder truck,” Chief Stats said. “Crews quickly engaged in an aggressive attack, first knocking down the parts of the fire that had extended to the house and then concentrating on the garage.”

The fire was brought under control around 5:30 a.m., and crews remained on scene for about an hour afterward to perform overhaul operations and extinguish any remaining hot spots, Chief Stats said.

No one was home at the time the fire began, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the North Reading Police Department.

Mutual aid at the scene was provided by fire departments from Wilmington, Reading, Andover, and Lynnfield, while the Middleton and Wakefield Fire Departments covered North Reading stations. The North Reading Police Department also responded.

“I would like to commend all who responded to this incident. The collective work of our Department and mutual aid partners ensured that the fire could be knocked down before doing more damage to the main body of the home,” said Chief Stats.
