NORTH READING — Firefighters with the North Reading fire department extricated a United States Postal Service employee whose hand got stuck in a mail sorting machine Monday night.
On Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 11:23 p.m., members of the North Reading Fire Department were dispatched to the United States Postal Service Middlesex/Essex Processing and Distribution Center located at 76 Main Street following a report that a woman’s hand was caught in a machine.
According to North Reading Fire Chief Don Stats, North Reading Engine 3 and Ambulance 2 arrived within minutes and found a 60-year-old woman whose hand was stuck between the conveyor belt of a sorting machine and a metal sorting tray.
“Crews carefully cut and disassembled parts of the conveyor belt and metal frame, and were able to free the victim after about 30 minutes,” Chief Stats said.
The woman was taken by Burlington ambulance to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for treatment.
