WAKEFIELD — At approximately 4:07 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, Wakefield firefighters responded to a home on Outlook Road after a resident called 911 to report smoke coming from the roof.
According to a statement from Wakefield’s Fire Chief Thomas Purcell, Engine 1, Engine 2, Ladder 1, and Car 3 responded to the scene.
When crews arrived on scene, they observed heavy smoke coming from the home and declared a working fire.
“Engine 1 crew stretched a hose line into the home and located smoke and fire coming from the brick chimney,” Chief Purcell said.
Firefighters opened sections of the brick chimney to assess the fire inside the walls, while additional crews cut into the roof to attack the flames from both inside and outside the home.
“Crews were able to stop the fire from traveling into and across the attic space, which would have consumed the home,” Chief Purcell said.
The fire was brought under control by 4:40 p.m., but crews remained on scene until 6:12 p.m. conducting an extensive overhaul of the chimney area.
“All occupants were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported,” Chief Purcell said. “Residents are currently displaced and are being assisted by the department.”
The Stoneham Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene, serving as the Rapid Intervention Team. The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department also responded to shut off gas and power to the building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Wakefield Fire Investigative Unit, with assistance from the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
