Four Eversource workers injured in transformer explosion in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD — On Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 , at approximately 8:30 a.m., the New Bedford Fire Department was dispatched to 1457 East Rodney French Boulevard following reports of a possible explosion and an injured Eversource worker.

According to a statement from the New Bedford Fire Department, when crews arrived on scene, they located multiple workers with injuries and requested additional EMS and fire department personnel.

Eversource employees who witnessed the incident said it happened “while workers confirming power to a transformer was secure to conduct service at an adjacent property.”

Four Eversource workers were taken to area hospitals by New Bedford EMS; two to St. Luke’s Hospital and two to Rhode Island Hospital. One of the workers initially taken to St. Luke’s Hospital was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital for further treatment.

The incident caused a brief power outage affecting more than 1,300 Eversource customers.

The incident is under investigation by Eversource, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the New Bedford Fire Department Investigation Unit.
