Southbridge man critically injured in Sturbridge crash involving U-Haul on Route 131

STURBRIDGE — On Friday, November 14, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Sturbridge police were dispatched to the area of 142 Main Street (Route 131) following a report of a motor vehicle accident.

According to a statement from the Sturbridge Police Department, when officers arrived on scene, they were met with the aftermath of a motor vehicle crash involving a U-Haul truck and Toyota Corolla.

The operator of the Toyota, a 23-year-old Southbridge man, sustained serious, life threatening injuries.

“Sturbridge police and fire personnel began lifesaving measures,” the Sturbridge Police Department said in its statement. “Officer Nicole Patterson quickly and efficiently applied a tourniquet to the driver’s injured arm, which undoubtedly contributed to saving his life.”

Life Flight was dispatched to the scene, but due to weather conditions, deployed their ground team instead of air transport. Route 131 was temporarily shut down between Fiske Hill Road and Shepard Road.

The driver of the Toyota was then transported to Harrington Hospital by Sturbridge EMS where they were intercepted by the Life Flight’s ground team. He was then transported by Life Flight to UMass Memorial Medical Center. The passenger of the Toyota was also transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center as a precaution, the Sturbridge Police Department said in its statement. The occupants of the U-Haul truck were not injured.

The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s (CEMLEC) Crash Reconstruction Team and CEMLEC Drone Unit also responded to the scene for further investigation.

“Preliminary facts established at the scene indicate that the Toyota Corolla crossed over the center line and collided with the U-Haul,” the Sturbridge Police Department said in its statement. “Speed and alcohol both appear to have contributed to the crash.”

The crash remains under investigation by the CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction Team.
