Dudley man, 56, arrested on second default warrant after allegedly strangling girlfriend

DUDLEY — A Dudley man charged in April with assaulting and strangling his girlfriend was arrested on a warrant on Nov. 11, 2025, after failing to appear for earlier court dates, court records show.

According to Dudley Police Officer Daniel Brunelle’s Statement of Facts for the incident, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at approximately 6:18 p.m., a woman in a Brandon Road apartment called 911 reporting her boyfriend had just tried to strangle her, and the dispatcher could hear him yelling in the background.

When Officer Brunelle and Officer Dylan Reney arrived on scene, he went to the apartment, found the door unlocked and announced his presence.

“I heard [the woman] yelling at her boyfriend to get out,” Officer Brunelle said in the Statement of Facts he authored for the incident. “Her boyfriend was identified as Jeffrey Devault.”

According to police, Jeffrey Peter Devault, 56, is a resident of Dudley, MA.

“Officer Reney spoke with Jeffery outside as I was speaking with [his girlfriend],” Officer Brunelle said.

Officer Brunelle said he asked Devault’s girlfriend if she needed any medical treatment and she declined.

“[Devault’s girlfriend] reported that Jeffery began yelling at her and she told him to leave, and he would not,” Officer Brunelle said. “Jeffery then kneeled on [her] chest with his knee and strangled her with his hands.” She told Officer Brunelle she screamed, “I can’t breathe,” panicked, and called 911.

After the altercation, the woman said Devault “called her a liar and cursed at her.” She then yelled, “You tried to kill me,” and Devault just laughed at her, according to Officer Brunelle’s Statement of Facts.

Jeffrey P. Devault was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault & Battery on Family/Household Member
  • Strangulation or Suffocation

“I advised [Devault’s girlfriend] of her 209A [abuse prevention order] rights, she declined and signed a refusal,” Officer Brunelle said. Later adding, “Jeffery was brought to the Dudley Police Department where he was booked per department procedure, advised of his rights and finger printed. His bail was set at $250 with a six hour hold by Vera Larson. Jeffery was then transported to Webster Police Department for holding.”

Devault was arraigned in Dudley District Court on April 22, 2025. Following his arraignment, he was released on $250 bail. Devault didn’t appear for a pretrial hearing scheduled for May 22, 2025, and a default warrant was issued for his arrest. On June 3, 2025, Devault’s bail was forfeited.

On June 18, 2025, after he was arrested, Devault appeared in court for his pretrial hearing. Following the hearing on June 18, he was released on $250 cash bail. Devault then attended the continuance of the pretrial hearing scheduled for Aug. 12, 2025.

Devault failed to appear for his next court date, a bench trial hearing scheduled for Oct. 9, 2025, and a default warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Nov. 12, 2025, the day following his arrest on another default warrant, Devault attended a default removal hearing. Following the default removal hearing on Nov. 12, 2025, Devault was released on $1,000 cash bail.

On Dec. 1, 2025, Devault attended a discovery, compliance, and election hearing in Dudley District Court. His next court date is a bench trial hearing scheduled for Jan. 20, 2025.

Disclaimer: If you are wondering why the arrest in this story took place in November, that’s because I had to file FOIA request(s) to obtain the court documents. FOIAs are time-consuming.
