DUNSTABLE — On Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m., the Dunstable police and fire departments responded to a report of a fire on the second floor of the residence located at 1095 Main Street.
According to a statement from Dunstable’s Fire Chief William Farrell, when firefighters arrived on scene, they observed heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home.
All occupants had evacuated the residence prior to first responders’ arrival.
“After several minutes of aggressive attack and attempts to stop the spread of the flames, a second alarm of response was ordered, and firefighters began a defensive operation,” Chief Farrell said. “There are no fire hydrants in the area, so firefighters had to use tankers to establish enough of a water supply to support four hose lines that were used to attack the fire. Eventually the bulk of flames were knocked down and firefighters were able to reenter the home to finish extinguishing the flames. ”
Chief Farrell said the home sustained fire damage throughout and is believed to be a total loss.
“Several residents were displaced, but they have family in the area and other places to stay temporarily,” Chief Farrell said.
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by fire crews from Nashua, Westford, Tyngsborough, Pepperell, Groton, Ayer, Devens, and Hollis, New Hampshire, while firefighters from Shirley provided station coverage in Dunstable.
The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation by the Dunstable Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
