What the National Weather Service predicts for Sunday’s storm in Massachusetts

BOSTON — The National Weather Service Boston/Norton has issued a winter storm warning for the entire state of Massachusetts from 7:00 a.m. Sunday through 8:00 p.m. Monday.

The total snow accumulation throughout the state is expected to range from about 13 to 19 inches total, with wind gusts expected to reach as high as 35 mph.

Throughout the state, the snow is expected to arrive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, with the heaviest snowfall expected to take place from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., when snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour.

According to the National Weather Service snowfall forecast map, North Central Massachusetts, including Fitchburg and the surrounding Worcester County region, is forecast to fall squarely within the 12–18 inch range, with the potential for locally higher amounts if heavier snow bands set up over the area.

Eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston area, the North Shore, and Lawrence, is forecast to receive 18 – 24 inches, with the lower end of the 18 – 24 inch range most likely.

In western Massachusetts, including the Berkshires, snowfall totals are expected to range from 12 to 18 inches, with isolated higher amounts possible at higher elevations due to terrain enhancement.

Across southeastern Massachusetts, including the South Coast, South Shore, Cape Cod, and the Islands, forecast confidence is lower due to the possibility of sleet mixing in with the snow, with snowfall ranging from 12 to 18 inches on the mainland and 8 to 12 inches on the Islands.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are expected to become slick and hazardous, and travel could be very difficult to impossible, according to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton. Forecasters said the conditions could impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service Norton/Boston said in its Winter Storm Warning issued at 2:33 a.m. this morning. “Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.”
