WEST NEWBURY — On Sunday, Feb. 8, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the West Newbury police and fire departments responded to the intersection of Main Street (Route 113) and Crane Neck Road following a report of a car accident.
According to West Newbury Police Chief Michael Dwyer, when first responders arrived on scene, they encountered the aftermath of a two-vehicle crash, and the driver of a pickup truck involved was trapped inside his vehicle.

“West Newbury firefighters, with support from Groveland and Merrimac firefighters, used extrication tools to free the driver, a 70-year-old man,” Chief Dwyer said in a statement. Cataldo Atlantic Ambulance transported the man to Pentucket Regional Middle High School, where a medical helicopter flew him to a Boston-area hospital with injuries believed to be serious.
The other driver did not report any injuries, police said.
Main Street remained closed Sunday afternoon as West Newbury police, assisted by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, continued their investigation.
Merrimac and Groveland police, along with the West Newbury Highway Department, provided assistance at the scene, Chief Dwyer said.
