SHIRLEY — An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered Wednesday the water near Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge in Shirley.
According to a joint statement from Shirley Police Chief Samuel Santiago and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, a group of young people walking near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge called police after spotting what appeared to be a body part in the water.
“Based upon the preliminary information, foul play is suspected,” Chief Santiago and Middlesex District Attorney Ryan said in the statement.
The investigation is being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Shirley police, Massachusetts State Police detectives, and the Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery Unit.
Officials said residents should expect an increased police presence in the area of Shaker Road and the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge as the investigation continues.
