One dead, three injured in Route 2 crash in Lancaster

LANCASTER — One person was killed and three others were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Route 2 eastbound in Lancaster on Sunday evening, according to Lancaster Fire-EMS.

The crash was reported at approximately 6:28 p.m. on March 22 in the area of mile markers 104.9 to 106.3, after Nashoba Valley Regional District Dispatch received an open 911 transfer from Massachusetts State Police. Lancaster Fire Chief Jon Belanger said there was initially no voice response on the call, though an injured party could later be heard in the background.

Lancaster fire and police units, along with Bolton paramedics, were dispatched to the scene as additional reports indicated that more than one vehicle may have been involved. Route 2 eastbound was shut down in the area.

When crews arrived on scene, they determined that two smaller SUVs had apparently collided head-on. A third vehicle traveling behind them appeared to have sideswiped one or both vehicles after the initial impact.

Lancaster Fire-EMS personnel found one unresponsive driver in one of the SUVs suffering life-threatening injuries. That person was transported to Leominster Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, officials said.

Two occupants in the second SUV suffered injuries believed to be serious but not immediately life-threatening. Both were transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus in Worcester. The occupant of the third vehicle was taken to Leominster Hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.

A family member of the deceased, who was not involved in the crash, later arrived at the scene and required medical attention. Harvard Fire provided mutual aid transport to Leominster Hospital for evaluation.

Massachusetts State Police accident reconstruction personnel responded to process the crash scene. Route 2 eastbound remained closed until the investigation was completed and hazards were cleared with assistance from MassDOT.

Chief Belanger said the identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released because the investigation remains ongoing and next-of-kin notifications have not yet been completed.
