Two people, three pets displaced in Fitchburg house fire

FITCHBURG — On Sunday, April 5, 2026, at approximately 11:18 p.m., Fitchburg firefighters responded to a single-family residence on Avon Place following a report of a fire in a bedroom.

According to the Fitchburg Fire Department, the caller initially reported that smoke could be seen coming from a bedroom door inside the home and that the door was locked.

All residents were reported to have safely evacuated the residence before crews arrived on scene.

According to the department, first-arriving firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames showing from a second-story window. Crews stretched multiple attack lines, gained roof access using an aerial ladder, and established a water supply.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and conducted extensive overhaul to check for extension, the department said. The fire was contained to a single bedroom.

Two people and three pets were displaced as a result of the fire, Acting Chief Patrick Haverty told News Link Live.

No injuries were reported.

Three engines, one ladder truck and two ambulances from Fitchburg responded to the scene, along with a ladder truck from Lunenburg. Mutual aid coverage for the city was provided by Leominster and Westminster.

The last unit cleared the scene at 1:12 a.m. Monday.

As of now, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, Acting Chief Haverty said.
