House Democrats seek return to session after Trump’s Iran threat as others invoke 25th Amendment

Top House Democrats are calling for Congress to return to session immediately to vote to end the war after President Donald Trump took to Truth Social stating “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not capitulate by 8 p.m. Eastern time. On Saturday, Trump gave Iran 48 hours to make a deal or open up the Strait of Hormuz.

The Associated Press reported that, in a statement, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and four other top House Democrats called Trump “completely unhinged,” saying his statement threatening to eradicate an entire civilization “shocks the conscience and requires a decisive congressional response.”

Meanwhile, other Democrats, including U.S. Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, are invoking the 25th Amendment. Markey wrote on X that he would support “any avenue” to remove Trump from office, adding that Trump should not remain in charge of America’s nuclear weapons as he threatens to end an entire civilization.
