NEWBURYPORT — Three patrons were injured Thursday evening when a BMW sport utility vehicle crashed into the Black Cow restaurant.
According to City Marshal Matthew Simons and Fire Chief Stephen H. Bradbury III, police and firefighters responded to the restaurant at 40 Merrimac Street at 6:23 p.m. following a report that a motor vehicle had crashed into the building.
When first responders arrived on scene, they found that a 2024 black BMW X3 had crashed into a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows just to the left of the restaurant’s main entrance.

City Marshal Simons and Fire Chief Bradbury said three patrons inside the restaurant were injured and evaluated by emergency medical services.
Two men were transported by Atlantic Ambulance Services to Anna Jaques Hospital for treatment. The third patron declined to be transported.
None of the injuries are immediately believed to be life-threatening, according to City Marshal Simons and Fire Chief Bradbury.
The driver, a 67-year-old Groveland woman, was not injured and cooperated with authorities at the scene.
City Marshal Simons and Fire Chief Bradbury said alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
An inspector from the Newburyport Building Department responded to the scene and determined there was no structural damage to the restaurant building. The bar area will need to be closed for repairs, but the restaurant was allowed to remain open with that portion shut down.
The vehicle was removed and towed from the scene by Newburyport Towing Service.
The crash remains under investigation by the Newburyport Police Department.
