IPSWICH — All beaches in Ipswich have been closed to swimming until further notice after an active discharge of untreated wastewater into the Merrimack River was reported in Haverhill, according to Ipswich Public Health Director Colleen Fermon.
The closure applies to Pavilion, Crane, Steep Hill, Clark, and Little Neck beaches.
Haverhill officials identified two breaks in sewer mains near the city’s main pumping stations on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, and confirmed an ongoing discharge of untreated wastewater into the Merrimack River.
Ipswich officials said all beaches will remain closed to swimming until water sample testing shows the water is safe. Signage will be posted at each beach.
Biomarine was expected to collect water samples Monday, June 29, from each of the five beaches to test bacteria levels. Results are expected Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
If the bacterial analysis shows high bacteria levels remain in the water, the closures will stay in place and additional testing will continue until levels return to normal, safe levels, Fermon said.
“We understand that these closures come at an unfortunate time with the incoming heat wave and 4th of July holiday, but this is a serious public health concern. The amount of wastewater discharged into the river has led us to take definitive action for the safety of our residents and visitors,” Fermon said. “We will reopen the beaches for swimming as soon as it is safe to do so. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding.”
