SHIRLEY — A large black bear was spotted crossing Front Street before moving onto Ayer Road and heading toward Peabody Road, the Shirley Police Department reported on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Police urged residents in the area to use caution, keep a safe distance from the bear and avoid approaching or feeding it.
Residents were also advised to bring pets indoors or keep them leashed and secure trash, bird feeders, and other potential food sources that could attract bears.
Gideoni De Oliveira Moutinho, 31, of Shirley, was arrested for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle after he was pulled over for driving with a broken headlight. After his arrest, Moutinho was released on bail and his charges were dropped.
A 69-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly driving her vehicle at a neighbor she believed was involved with her boyfriend and was later found with hydrocodone pills lacking a prescription, according to Shirley police.
An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered in the water near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge in Shirley. Officials say foul play is suspected.
