LEOMINSTER — An officer struck by a car while assisting a tow truck out of a parking lot last night sustained serious injuries.

According to the Leominster Police Department, last night at 9:12 p.m., Officer Garrett Hardy was struck by a car heading west on Lancaster Street while helping guide a tow truck out of a parking lot. The tow truck was needed for an earlier accident that took place at the intersection of Lancaster Street and Elm Hill Road.

The operator of the vehicle that struck Hardy stopped and is cooperative with the investigation, according to police.

Hardy was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester. He sustained a left leg injury that will require surgery as well as a concussion.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office’s Massachusetts State Police Crime Prevention and Control Unit and the Leominster Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, which is ongoing.
