STERLING – Amid Friday’s unseasonable heat, the Sterling Fire Department beat back a large brush fire that overtook a section of woods along Metropolitan Road, sending large plumes of smoke over the Wachusett Reservoir.
The fire was reported by the Sterling Police Department as early as about 4 p.m. Friday in the area of Chace Hill Road and Metropolitan Road. Residents were told to avoid the area.
By 9 p.m., the fire department announced in a Twitter post that the brush fire had been contained to 36 acres, adding that crews will be returning to the scene of the fire Saturday morning to “complete wetting down the area.”
The Sterling Fire Department received mutual aid from 14 area fire departments in containing the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
