GILL – A 57-year-old Athol woman, Tracy Matthews, passed away following a car accident on Route 2 near the Barton Cove recreational area Friday afternoon.
According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the accident took place at about 4 p.m. when a Mazda Miata, driven by a 63-year-old Needham man that was heading west on Route 2, crossed into the oncoming lane, and crashed head-on into the Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Matthews.
Following the accident, Matthews was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s emergency room in Greenfield where she was pronounced dead.
The 63-year-old Needham man and his passenger were transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Springfield with non-life-threatening injuries.
Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
