CAMBRIDGE – A Cambridge resident wanted for murdering and disemboweling his roommate in Indiana six years ago was arrested Thursday morning.
According to Massachusetts State Police, John Hallett, 54, was taken into custody at his 15 Chester Street apartment by a coalition of local, state, and federal law enforcement officials.
Last year, an investigation conducted by police in Michigan City, Indiana, indicated that, in 2017, Hallett struck his roommate in the head with a blunt object, choked him, disemboweled his body, and disposed of the remains in various public trash cans. An arrest warrant for Hallett was issued after a cadaver dog found human remains in the basement of the home he shared with the slain man.
Over the course of the investigation, Michigan City police and U.S. Marshals in Indiana learned that Hallett was living in Cambridge, MA. On Thursday, a Cambridge Police detective discovered his actual address, 15 Chester Street. Shortly thereafter, Hallett was taken into custody and transported to the Cambridge Police Station where he was booked as a fugitive from justice.
According to Massachusetts State Police, prosecutors will arrange for Hallett’s rendition to Indiana where he will face the murder charge.
