Late night blaze in Somerville apartment complex injures three, including firefighter

SOMERVILLE — A fire in an apartment complex Wednesday night resulted in three hospitalizations, one of which was a firefighter.

At about 10:37 p.m., Somerville Fire Department personnel responded to 373 Highland Avenue, a 53-unit apartment complex, where firefighters located a fire in the first-floor apartment.

Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters found a man on the couch and a woman in a bedroom of the first-floor apartment, fire officials said. Both individuals were rescued and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The fire was confined to the first-floor apartment, but smoke spread throughout the building.

Fire officials credit the building’s functioning sprinkler system for preventing the spread of the fire.

In addition to the two residents, a firefighter was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been treated and released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
