Worcester man receives 9-11 years for courthouse shooting incident

WORCESTER – A 32-year-old Worcester man will spend the next 9-to-11 year in jail for his role in a shooting incident outside the Worcester Trial Court in February 2023.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early announced that on Tuesday, James Freeman IV, 32, of Worcester, pleaded guilty to armed assault with the intent to murder and the following firearms charges:

  • two counts of carrying a firearm without a license (3rd offense),
  • assault with a dangerous weapon
  • firearm possession in commission of a felony
  • discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building,
  • improper storage of a large capacity firearm
  • possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number

On Feb. 2, 2023, Worcester police responded to 144 Main Street, the area outside the Worcester Trial Court, following reports of gunshots fired outside the court house.

After locating evidence of the shooting at the scene, officers identified Freeman as one of the individuals involved.

Officials say Freeman fired multiple shots at a car driving on a bust part of Main Street. No injuries were reported.

Freeman was arrested six days after the incident during a routine traffic stop, where police also found a firearm and ammunition inside the vehicle he was driving.

When Freeman is released from jail, he will serve two years of probation.

Freeman was sentenced by Judge Daniel Wrenn.
