Haverhill teen arrested after punching officer, leading police on chase following beachside confrontation in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN — On Thursday, June 20, at about 5:31 p.m., officers with the Georgetown Police Department were dispatched to the beach at American Legion Park following reports that a group of people were drinking alcohol by the beach, which is a violation of town bylaws.

When police arrived at the scene, they found two men and four women gathered around a tree at the beach. Several of them were holding alcoholic beverages.

The officers instructed the group to vacate the area. According to Chief David Sedgwick, all complied except for a 17-year-old juvenile male from Haverhill, who, while shouting obscenities and disturbing passers-by, led police on a foot chase.

Police located the male juvenile near the basketball courts along Flint Road and subsequently apprehended him on Chaplin Road.

“The male juvenile refused officers’ orders and punched an officer on the side of the face with a closed fist,” Chief David Sedgwick reported in a statement.

He was then transported to the Georgetown Police Station for booking.

The male juvenile was formally charged with:

  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Assault & Battery on a Police Officer
  • Trespassing
  • Person Under 21 in Possession of Liquor
  • Disturbing the Peace

His bail was set at $500.

He was arraigned in Lawrence Juvenile Court on Friday, June 21.
