BOSTON — Severe thunderstorms are likely across much of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding, and potential tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The most intense storms are expected between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. west of I-495 and north of I-90. The National Weather Service predicted on Saturday afternoon that Pittsfield and North Adams have the highest risk for severe thunderstorms and potential tornadoes in the state on Sunday. The rest of the state, except the South Shore, South Coast, Cape, and Islands, also has some risk of severe weather, though to a lesser extent.
Residents in affected areas should stay indoors, have a safety plan if they must go out, and ensure they can receive weather alerts throughout the afternoon and evening, the NWS said. The primary threats include tornadoes and damaging winds, with large hail and torrential rain also possible.

In addition to storms, dangerous heat is predicted for Western Massachusetts, with a heat advisory in effect for eastern Hampden and Hampshire Counties until 7 p.m. Sunday. Heat indexes may reach up to 102 degrees, posing risks for heat-related illnesses. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid the sun, and check on vulnerable individuals.
Coastal areas of Eastern Massachusetts are under a high surf advisory until 7 p.m. Waves of 4 to 9 feet could create hazardous swimming and surfing conditions. A small craft advisory is also in effect along the Massachusetts coast until 8 p.m., with south winds of 10 to 20 knots and gusts up to 25 knots, making boating dangerous for inexperienced operators.
Highs on Sunday are expected to be in the upper 80s and lower 90s, with sunny periods interspersed with thunderstorms and showers. The chance of storms continues overnight with lows in the lower 70s, and rainfall could reach up to half an inch.
Monday will be mostly sunny with highs in the lower 80s, although Central and Western Massachusetts might see afternoon showers. Lows will be in the mid-60s, with highs on Tuesday in the upper 80s.
By Wednesday, sunny skies are expected to turn to thunderstorms in the late afternoon, with highs in the lower 90s. Rain will continue into Thursday morning, with lows in the high 60s to lower 70s. The weather is predicted to clear up by Thursday afternoon, bringing sunnier skies and highs in the mid-80s, continuing into the weekend.
