Two men, one from Gardner, the other from Auburn, identified as victims of fatal crash in Royalston

ROYALSTON — The names of the two individuals who were killed in a car accident on Athol Road in Royalston on Tuesday, July 16, have been released by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

Roger Byron, 52, of Gardner, and Paul Sliwinski, 69, of Auburn, were the individuals who passed away in the crash. The DA’s office has not yet released any information from the preliminary investigation into the cause of the crash, which is still under investigation by the Royalston Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section, and State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

Royalston’s Police Chief Curtis Deveneau told the Athol Daily News that the crash was reported at 2:22 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, a Honda CRV heading north on Athol Road struck a telephone pole, then crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a southbound VW Jetta near the intersection of Athol and Doane Hill roads. The Honda CRV was occupied by a driver (whose name has not been released) along with Byron and Sliwinski, who were passengers. The VW Jetta was only occupied by its driver.

Sliwinski was pronounced deceased at the scene and Byron was pronounced dead at Athol Hospital. The drivers of both vehicles were also transported to Athol Hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
