Worcester public libraries closed Friday after patron strikes staff member in head with skateboard

WORCESTER — The Worcester Public Library’s main branch and all other branches are closed today after a staff member was struck in the head by a patron with a skateboard.

The incident occurred yesterday when a patron, identified as Harry Frotman, 31, allegedly struck a staff member with a skateboard in the back of the head. According to court documents, the staff member, who was knocked unconscious, fell to the floor and was bleeding from the head.

City officials say the attack was unprovoked and that the staff member, who received medical treatment, did not sustain life threatening injuries.

Frotman was taken into custody by Worcester Police and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Worcester District Court. He faces charges of aggravated assault and battery for causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to police.

In response to the incident, City Manager Eric D. Batista and Worcester Public Library (WPL) Executive Director Jason Homer met with staff yesterday after the main branch closed an hour early to discuss the incident and address concerns. The city’s public libraries were closed Friday to continue the discussion, city officials say.

“The safety and security of all library employees and patrons is of the utmost importance,” City Manager Batista said in a statement. Batista noted that the administration has taken steps to address safety at the Worcester Public Library, including the establishment of a community resources department, which includes a community liaison, two security officers, and a social worker. Library staff have also received training in de-escalation techniques.

“Violence is not acceptable and will not be tolerated,” Batista said.  “The Worcester Public Library will remain an open and welcoming place for all members of the community, but this sacred space and those who operate it must be treated with respect, honor and dignity.”

The incident remains under investigation.
