Tewksbury police arrest juvenile from Lowell for brandishing gun at mail carrier in Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — A 14-year-old juvenile from Lowell has been arrested for brandishing a gun at a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Tewksbury earlier this week.

Tewksbury Police Chief Ryan Columbus reported that on Tuesday, August 13, at around 11:04 a.m., police received a report of an individual allegedly brandishing a firearm at a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier near 483 Shawsheen Street.

Tewksbury Police arrived at the scene and observed a vehicle speeding along Whipple Road. They pursued the vehicle to Tomahawk Drive, where the driver suddenly abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Tewksbury Police conducted a search in the Nightingale Lane area, where a witness had reportedly last seen the suspect. Tewksbury police were assisted in their search by the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT Team, drones, and K-9 units.

During the search, a Tewksbury police K-9 discovered a firearm behind a residence on Grasshopper Lane, which was believed to belong to the suspect.

As the investigation progressed, Tewksbury Police secured an arrest warrant for a 14-year-old from Lowell, identified as the suspect. On Thursday, August 15, around 2 p.m., officers located the juvenile in Lowell and took him into custody based on the warrant.

The 14-year-old was charged with:

  • Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Firearm)
  • Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID

The 14-year-old’s arraignment was scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15, in Lowell Juvenile Court.
