STERLING — The worker who was killed in a quarry in Sterling on Thursday has been identified as 67-year-old Brian Curtis Derby of Townsend, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the quarry located at 17 Stone Crest Way just before 8 a.m. yesterday after a rock ledge collapsed onto the excavator Derby was inside of.
Using camera equipment, responders assessed the scene and found no signs of life. Derby was pronounced deceased at 8:39 a.m. yesterday.

Recovery efforts continued throughout the night, and his body was ultimately recovered by the District 8 Technical Rescue Team, which included resources from multiple local departments such as Barre, Clinton, Leominster, Fitchburg, Gardner, Holden, Sterling, and West Boylston. Derby’s body was taken from the scene early Friday morning by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
