CHARLTON — A 26-year-old Charlton woman has been arrested and charged with reckless homicide after a fatal car crash on Southbridge Road (Route 169) in Charlton. According to a statement from The Charlton Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 8:56 p.m. on September 21, 2024, near Carpenter Hill Road, when the woman’s 2015 Mercedes CLA crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, striking a 2005 Honda Civic head-on.
The impact resulted in the death of the Honda Civic’s driver, a 51-year-old woman from Southbridge, while her passengers sustained serious injuries and remain hospitalized. The driver of the Mercedes was also hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash.
Personnel from the Charlton and Southbridge police and fire departments responded to the scene, extricated the victims, and transported them to local hospitals.
Following an initial investigation, the Charlton woman was arrested on September 22 and charged with Reckless Homicide by Motor Vehicle, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and a Marked Lanes violation. She was arraigned on September 23 in Dudley District Court.
The case is being investigated by the Charlton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit-Worcester, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction Unit. Further inquiries should be directed to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
