Good morning, I’m Genevieve DiNatale, editor-in-chief of News Link Live, here with a recap of today’s top national and international stories.
The latest Emerson College national poll shows 49% of voters support Vice President Kamala Harris and 48% support former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election. When undecided voters are asked which candidate they lean toward, Harris’s support rises to 50% and Trump’s to 49%.
Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted that 56% of men support Trump, while 42% of men do not. In contrast, women favor Harris 55% to 41%. Additionally, Hispanic voters support Harris 61% to 35%, and Black voters back her 81% to 12%, while white voters favor Trump 60% to 38%.
The poll, conducted from October 14-16 with a sample size of 1,000 likely voters, has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
In other news, the New York Times published a story on Oct. 22, with an exclusive interview with Trump’s longest-serving chief of staff former Marine general John Kelly. Kelly told the Times that Trump was a fascist, would govern like a dictator if he could, had no concept of the Constitution or the rule of law, and added that he was very concerned about Trump’s recent comments about using the military against domestic opponents, which Trump referred to as the “enemy within.”
Here’s what Kelly said to a New York Times reporter about Trump being a fascist, Kelly began by reading a definition of fascism he found online.
[insert fascism quote]
Kelly also told the Times that Trump told him repeatedly that Hitler “did some good things” and that the former president looked down on service members who were killed or injured on the battlefield calling them “losers and suckers” and that Trump did not want to be seen in public with veteran amputees, saying “it just doesn’t look good for me.”
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to rebut Kelly’s claims yesterday saying “Thank you for your support against a total degenerate named John Kelly, who made up a story out of pure Trump Derangement Syndrome Hatred! This guy had two qualities, which don’t work well together. He was tough and dumb. The problem is his toughness morphed into weakness, because he became JELLO with time! The story about the Soldiers was A LIE, as are numerous other stories he told. Even though I shouldn’t be wasting my time with him, I always feel it’s necessary to hit back in pursuit of THE TRUTH. John Kelly is a LOWLIFE, and a bad General, whose advice in the White House I no longer sought, and told him to MOVE ON! His wife once told me, at Camp David, John admires you tremendously, and when he leaves the Military, he will only speak well of you. I said, Thank you!”
The Biden administration announced yesterday that at least 3,000 North Korean troops are currently in Russia receiving military training. John Kirby, a National Security Council spokesman, told reporters at the White House that while it’s uncertain whether these soldiers will join the war in Ukraine alongside Russian forces, there will be serious consequences for those who do. “If these North Korean troops are employed against Ukraine,” Kirby stated, “they will become legitimate military targets.”
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking to reporters in Rome, emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that if Russia and North Korea—both nuclear-armed nations and long-standing U.S. adversaries—are collaborating, it poses a significant threat not just to Europe but also to the Indo-Pacific region.
Austin suggested that North Korea’s troop deployment may indicate weaknesses in Russia’s military, more than two years into President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides. He noted that Putin has previously sought drones, missiles, and munitions from allies like Iran and North Korea to address critical shortages.
Kirby confirmed that the Biden administration will continue to supply weapons and material support to Ukraine should North Korean forces enter the conflict.
