MEDFIELD — Fourth and fifth graders at the Dale Street School raised nearly $1,000 for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, an animal shelter in Asheville, North Carolina, that was destroyed during Hurricane Helene.
According to an Oct. 29 statement by Medfield Public Schools Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden, the students began collecting donations on Oct. 15, wrapping up their campaign on Oct. 29 with close to $1,000 raised.
The students’ inspiration came from author Barbara O’Connor, a former Author-in-Residence at Dale Street School and current North Carolina resident, who shared the shelter’s need for support. Moved by her call for help, around 400 students joined efforts to collect donations from family, friends, and the community, using animal-decorated water jugs for their collections.

Since hearing from O’Connor the students have been gathering donations from family and friends in large water jugs decorated to look like animals.
To further spread the word, the student council has been promoting the initiative through the school’s morning newscast, posters, and Principal Stephen Grenham’s weekly blog. Beyond school, students have expanded their efforts into the community, with three fourth-graders collecting an additional $110 at a recent soccer tournament.

“I am very proud of all the students involved in this effort to help Brother Wolf Animal Rescue,” Principal Grenham said. “They have shown empathy and strong leadership by taking the initiative to promote their cause and collect these donations. They have done a great job raising awareness and making a real difference in the lives of people and animals outside their own community.”
