HUBBARDSTON — The Hubbardston Select Board is holding a public hearing on Monday, November 4, 2024, to review a series of proposed warrant articles for the upcoming Special Town Meeting, on Nov. 19, 2024, including a warrant article that would allow licensed firearm holders to carry firearms in specific town-owned administrative buildings.

The proposal, which is listed as the first warrant article and titled, “Exemption of Town-Owned Administrative Buildings from Firearm-Prohibited Areas,”seeks to exempt Hubbardston’s Town Hall and other administrative buildings from the state’s expanded “firearm-prohibited areas” under Massachusetts Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2024. This new state law has expanded “firearm-prohibited areas” to include most public buildings, including Town-owned administrative spaces like Town Hall.

If approved, this proposal would allow licensed firearms holder to carry firearms within certain Town-owned administrative buildings in Hubbardston, in line with what is presently permitted under the new state law. Schools and polling areas would remain gun-free zones.

The town’s announcement for the public hearing says the proposal has been reviewed by legal counsel and local law enforcement to ensure it aligns with public safety standards and state regulations.
