YARMOUTH — At 6:28 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2024, the Yarmouth Fire Department received a call from a passerby reporting a structure fire at 2 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, the former location of Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn, which has been closed for several years.

With heavy flames visible from Route 6A, the first Yarmouth unit on scene—Chief in Car 51—called for a working fire assignment, bringing in fire crews from Barnstable, Dennis, and Hyannis, along with an ambulance from Harwich, the Yarmouth Fire Department said in a statement.

The fire spread rapidly throughout the structure, posing a threat to nearby buildings on the property and adjacent brush areas. A second alarm was struck, bringing in additional crews from Brewster, Dennis, and Hyannis. Due to the large volume of fire, the Yarmouth and Barnstable water departments supported efforts by boosting water capacity at the scene. Yarmouth Building Officials and the Yarmouth Police Department also assisted on scene.

Fire crews worked for several hours to contain the blaze, the Yarmouth Fire Department said in its statement. Fire departments from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills, Chatham, Dennis, Hyannis, and Orleans covered Yarmouth fire stations during the incident. No civilian injuries were reported, though one firefighter was evaluated on scene for a minor injury.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is under investigation by the Yarmouth Fire Department with support from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
