West Yarmouth man charged with OUI after erratic driving ends in utility pole crash

SOUTH YARMOUTH — A 47-year-old West Yarmouth man was arrested Thursday afternoon after Yarmouth police said multiple callers reported a pickup truck driving erratically before it crashed into a utility pole.

On the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, the Yarmouth Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a pickup truck driving erratically in the area of Old Main Street and South Street.

According to the Yarmouth Police Department, the callers reported that the truck was unable to maintain its lane and nearly struck other vehicles head-on.

Police said the truck continued driving erratically along South Shore Drive, passing busy beach parking lots and numerous pedestrians on the sidewalks.

Moments later, the truck crashed into a utility pole on Pine Grove Road, sustaining heavy front-end damage and cracking the pole, which was left leaning, the Yarmouth Police Department reported.

When officers arrived, they saw a bystander attempting to restrain the driver, who police said had tried to walk away from the scene.

Officers detained the driver and said they observed numerous signs of intoxication.

A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Michael Volpe, 47, of West Yarmouth, on the following charges:

  • Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Marked Lanes Violation

Volpe was transported to the Yarmouth Police Department for booking.

He was arraigned Friday in Barnstable District Court.
