YARMOUTH — At around 10:40 p.m. on December 25, 2024, the Yarmouth Fire Department was dispatched to 9 Gill Avenue in West Yarmouth following a report of a fire on the second floor of the residence, which was occupied.
“On arrival, crews reported smoke and fire from a second-floor window, and that all occupants were able to exit the structure on their own,” the Town of Yarmouth’s Fire Department said in a statement. “A working fire assignment was ordered, bringing in fire crews from Dennis and Hyannis, along with an ambulance from Centerville Osterville Marstons Mills.”
Yarmouth Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue stated in an on-scene interview with the Hyannis News that the department received a call from a woman staying in a camper on the property. The woman, whose mother owns the home, saw flames coming from a second-floor window. At the time of the fire, the woman’s mother, in her mid-70s, was on the second floor of the residence, and her husband, was in the basement.

According to Chief Arrascue, another resident of the camper helped the woman safely exit the second floor of her home, while her husband and a civilian attempted to put out the fire using fire extinguishers. Eventually, both the husband and the civilian evacuated the home. All three individuals were treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians for smoke inhalation and later released. Two dogs were also rescued from the home.
According to the Yarmouth Fire Department, the fire began in a second-floor bedroom and although the fire was contained to the area of origin, the home sustained significant smoke and water damage in the blaze.
“Fire crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control,” the Yarmouth Fire Department said in its statement. “Barnstable, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Harwich, and Hyannis Fire Departments covered Yarmouth Fire Stations during the incident and handled subsequent calls for service. There were no injuries reported to first responders at the incident.”
The two residents of the home, who were displaced by the fire, received assistance from the Red Cross, according to the Yarmouth Fire Department. The residents of the camper are most likely going to remain in the camper, Chief Arrascue said.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is currently under investigation by the Yarmouth Fire Department.
