Sterling firefighters overcome freezing conditions to extinguish early morning blaze

STERLING — At 4:25 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024, the Sterling police and fire departments were dispatched to a residence on Redemption Rock Road following a report of a structure fire.

According to a statement from the Sterling Fire Department, when Chief David Hulbert arrived on scene, he found heavy smoke coming from the residence and requested additional aid from the Clinton Fire Department, West Boylston Fire Department, and Leominster Fire Department.

“Firefighters worked together to quickly extinguish a fire that originated in the basement,” the Sterling Fire Department said in its statement.

All residents made it out of the home safely.

“With the temperature only being 15 degrees this morning, firefighters had some additional obstacles such as the fire hydrant freezing shut, and the driveway icing over,” the Sterling Fire Department said in its statement. “We would like to thank the Sterling DPW for coming to sand and salt the area to keep us safe, Sterling Municipal Light Department for securing the power to the building, and Holden Fire Department and Lancaster, MA Fire Department for providing coverage to our town during the 2.5-hour operation.”
