Fernandes Anderson announces resignation, apologizes in statement after agreeing to plead guilty

BOSTON — Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson publicly announced her resignation Tuesday, hours after agreeing to plead guilty to federal corruption charges. In a written statement, Fernandes Anderson apologized to her supporters and constituents and confirmed her intent to step down.

“I have decided to plead guilty and resolve the case brought against me,” she wrote. “I would like to apologize to my constituents, supporters, and all who have been impacted. Please forgive me.”

Fernandes Anderson called her resignation “the right thing to do” and said she would work with the District 7 Advisory Council in the coming days to evaluate a timeline and develop a transition plan.

“I will do everything possible to make an orderly exit to ensure my constituents’ needs are met,” she stated.

The District 7 councilor, who represents neighborhoods including Roxbury, Dorchester, the South End, and Fenway, has faced calls to resign since her December 2024 arrest on charges that she ran a kickback scheme with a family member employed in her City Hall office, using public funds to address personal financial struggles.

“I will have more to say at the appropriate time in court but I will not be commenting further beyond this statement,” Fernandes Anderson said. “I pray that the press will respect my privacy, as well as the privacy of my family.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has recommended a sentence of one year and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and $13,000 in restitution, according to the plea agreement.
