WORCESTER — A 53-year-old man was taken into custody Monday following a nine-and-a-half-hour standoff with police at an apartment on Forestdale Road, according to a statement from the Worcester Police Department.
At approximately 12:08 p.m. on May 19, 2025, officers—including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) members and a clinician—responded to a request for a welfare check at the address. Upon arrival, they were informed that the resident, later identified as Raymond Nydam, was making threats.
Police said Nydam had bolted his door shut and made threats that possibly involved explosives. While officers positioned themselves outside, Nydam allegedly aimed what appeared to be a rifle at one of them while shouting threats. Officers took cover and requested additional support from the Crisis Negotiation Team.
Throughout the standoff, Nydam reportedly yelled at officers, threw items from the residence, and armed himself with what appeared to be a samurai sword, police said. Negotiation efforts continued for several hours, and the department’s SWAT team was also called to the scene.
At around 9:40 p.m., Nydam exited the apartment and was taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
