GARDNER — Mayor Mike Nicholson issued a statement today announcing that City Electrical Inspector Darrell Sweeney was seriously injured in a work-related accident earlier in the day.
Sweeney had been repairing a flashing light at an intersection on Temple Street when a passing truck clipped the bucket truck he was working in, causing his safety harness to fail. He fell out of the bucket and broke several bones, WCVB reported.
“I was able to visit and speak with him briefly in the hospital, where he is being cared for by a dedicated team of medical professionals,” Nicholson said in a statement. “Darrell has a difficult road ahead, but he is in good hands, and we are all hoping for his steady healing and full recovery.”

Nicholson thanked first responders for their quick actions at the scene and expressed appreciation for the hospital staff providing care.
“Their actions made an enormous difference during a very serious situation,” Nicholson said.
Nicholson noted that the city is committed to supporting Sweeney, his family, and his colleagues in the coming weeks.
“Our thoughts and our prayers are with Darrell, his family, and his colleagues,” Nicholson added. “The City of Gardner stands ready to support them however we can in the days and weeks to come.”
