14-year-old girl struck and killed by commuter rail train in Worcester

WORCESTER — A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a commuter rail train near Atlas Street around 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and Transit police.

The girl was walking with a group of friends who had trespassed onto the Framingham/Worcester Line’s right of way when she was struck, according to a statement from Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the 14-year-old was on the tracks at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident, and train service on the Framingham/Worcester Line was temporarily suspended in Grafton while buses transported passengers.

In a statement released by Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan, the MBTA said, “On behalf of the Transit Police and the entire MBTA organization we offer our most heartfelt condolences to the decedent’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this most unimaginably difficult and profound tragedy.”

Transit police and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the girl’s death, which the MBTA says does not involve foul play.
