RUTLAND โ On Friday, May 23, 2025, Rutland Police Chief Nicholas Monaco was monitoring traffic at the intersection of Main Street (MA Route 122A) and Watson Lane when he observed a gray BMW 335 sedan traveling eastbound without a front license plate. The vehicle was being driven by a white teenage male with dark hair.

โAs the vehicle passed, I noticed the rear plate was MA [# redacted],โ Chief Monaco said. โI checked it through my computer and found it was registered to Christopher Moynihan of [# redacted] Brunelle Drive, Rutland. I recognized Moynihan’s name, as I am aware that he has a teenage son named Hayden Moynihan who has recently had a suspended MA [Massachusetts] license, and was the subject of some speeding complaints.โ

Chief Monaco looked up Haydenโs license status, found out that it was suspended, and noticed that the RMV photo of Hayden looked like the teenage male operating the vehicle.
โI activated my emergency lights to go stop the vehicle, eventually catching up to it shortly after it passed into the Town of Holden. (Holden PD [Police Department] and Rutland PD [Police Department] are both signatory communities in the CEMLEC [Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council] mutual aid agreement),โ Chief Monaco said. โI stopped the vehicle and made contact with the operator, who was ID’d by his MA [Massachusetts] license as Hayden Moynihan, and I explained the reason for the stop. Hayden seemed surprised that his license was suspended and stated that he thought he and his father paid all fines and fees, and took a driver safety class associated with his suspension.โ

According to police, Hayden G. Moynihan, 18, is a resident of Brunelle Drive in Rutland, MA.
Chief Monaco allowed Hayden to access the RMV website on his phone to see if he could determine the cause of the suspension.
โI had Hayden sit in my cruiser and I assisted him with navigating the RMV portal,โ Chief Monaco said. โI found that in addition to the three ‘surchargeable’ events he mentioned, there was a separate 30-day suspension for three speeding violations. I determined that Hayden would not be able to rectify his license status roadside. He was allowed to leave the vehicle in a safe place on the side of the road and I gave him a ride home. I later called Holden PD and advised them that the vehicle was there.โ
Chief Monaco issued a criminal complaint citation to Hayden for the following:
- Operating Motor Vehicle with License Suspended
- Number Plate Violation (no front plate)
โDispatch requested a certified copy of suspension from the RMV and I completed an RMV suspension affidavit form and submitted it to the driver control unit,โ Chief Monaco said. Adding, โHayden was polite and respectful during the entire encounter and seemed genuinely unaware of the current suspension status.โ
Haydenโs arraignment was scheduled for May 23, 2025, in East Brookfield District Court.
