SPRINGFIELD — A traffic stop in Springfield led to the seizure of a loaded large-capacity firearm and trafficking-weight amounts of cocaine and heroin, according to the Springfield Police Department.
In a Facebook post, the department said that on Wednesday, July 2, at approximately 7:05 p.m., officers from the Springfield Police Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau stopped a vehicle in the 0-100 block of Central Street for a defective headlight. The stop followed a patrol in the Adams Street area just minutes earlier.
Police said the driver, identified as 32-year-old Thomas Rodriguez of Enfield, Connecticut, was found in possession of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, and more than $3,200 in cash. According to police, the crack cocaine weighed approximately 28 grams, and the powder cocaine about 10 grams.

Inside the vehicle, officers reportedly found a loaded large-capacity firearm, loose ammunition, and approximately 400 bags of heroin. Rodriguez and the passenger, identified as 48-year-old Bobby Guzman of Springfield, were both placed under arrest.
Rodriguez is facing multiple charges, including:
- Possession of a large-capacity firearm during the commission of a felony
- Firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime
- Convicted felon in possession of a firearm
- Possession of ammunition without FID card
- Carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way
- Carrying a firearm without a license
- Trafficking cocaine (18–36 grams)
- Possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug
- Possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug
- Motor vehicle lights violation
Guzman was charged with:
- Carrying a firearm without a license
- Carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way
- Convicted felon in possession of a firearm
- Firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime
The Springfield Police Department did not release additional information about the investigation.
