WEBSTER — The suspect in the July 15 robbery of Hometown Bank on Gore Road has been identified as Shawn Twomey, 52, of New London, Connecticut, who died after a motorcycle crash following another bank robbery in Stonington, Connecticut.
In an update posted today, the Webster Police Department said that after speaking with Connecticut State Police and the Stonington Police Department, they confirmed Twomey was a suspect in the Webster robbery.
According to police, Twomey robbed another bank in Stonington on July 23 and died shortly thereafter when he crashed his motorcycle while fleeing the scene. Authorities said Twomey struck a tractor-trailer, became separated from his motorcycle, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the earlier robbery began after a white male riding a blue Suzuki GSXR motorcycle entered Hometown Bank at 4 Gore Road in Webster around 8:30 a.m. on July 15.

Webster police said the suspect “mentioned a firearm,” though no weapon was displayed. He fled southbound on Interstate 395 into Connecticut with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The FBI, Connecticut State Police, and Webster Police Department conducted a joint investigation. Police also searched for evidence that may have been discarded along Route 395 during the suspect’s escape.
“This is another fine example of multijurisdictional agencies coming together for the same goal of catching the bad guy. And make no mistake, we will,” the Webster Police Department said in a July 15 statement.
