Woman arrested for impersonating federal agent in $20K Auburn mortgage scam

AUBURN — On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Auburn police arrested a woman who allegedly attempted to scam a local couple out of $20,000 by posing as a federal agent.

According to a statement from the Auburn Police Department, the couple were trying to pay off their mortgage when they inadvertently contacted a scammer posing as their financial institution. A man on the phone told the couple to withdraw $20,000 from their bank and that an “undercover federal agent” would come to their home to collect the money.

Soon after, a woman claiming to be an “undercover FDIC agent” arrived near the residence.

“The couple were instructed to deliver the money to the woman outside their home,” The Auburn Police Department said in its statement. “Realizing they were being scammed, the couple contacted the Auburn Police Department.”

When officers arrived on scene, they located a woman walking away from the would-be victims’ home.

The woman was stopped and identified as Andy Ng of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Ng was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted Larceny

“Auburn police officers located a vehicle that was believed to be used by Ms. Ng, and quickly learned that the vehicle contained a substantial amount of money that was believed to be evidence of similar crimes,” The Auburn Police Department said in its statement. Adding, “Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for the vehicle. Auburn Police Detectives located approximately $50,000 dollars inside the vehicle along with identifiers that suggested the money belonged to at least one other victim.”

Auburn police detectives are working to return the recovered funds to the other identified victim, and authorities believe Ng may face additional charges in other jurisdictions.

Ng was arraigned in Worcester District Court and held on $5,000 bail.

“Please remember to speak with your loved ones about the dangers of online scams! Remember Police Officers or Federal Agents will NEVER come to your home to collect cash for any reason!” the Auburn Police Department said.
