Officer injured in crash while attempting traffic stop in Newburyport

NEWBURYPORT — On Monday, August 4, 2025, at approximately 11 a.m., Newburyport police and fire crews, along with Atlantic Ambulance, responded to a reported crash involving a vehicle and a police motorcycle near 6 Plum Island Turnpike.

“A preliminary investigation determined that an officer was attempting to stop a motor vehicle on the turnpike and was driving with lights and sirens on when the crash occurred,” City Marshal Matthew Simons said in a statement.

The officer was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries by EMTs from Atlantic Ambulance and the Newburyport Fire Department. He was then transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

“The crash is being investigated by supervisory personnel within the Newburyport Police Department, in accordance with standard procedure for any incident involving a police vehicle,” Marshal Simon said.
